After an harassing travel from Sao Paulo via LosAngeles and Zurich, Hana Mandlikova arrived exhausted down under. Despite a straight-set wins over veteran Billie-Jean King, she then lost in the round Robin Format to Manuela Maleeva and Pam Shriver

Mandlikova, lost her opening game, but quickly broke back to take King’s service and level the score. Mandlikova’s pinpoint sideline drives and accurate passing shots frequently caught the veteran American out of position and ‘ enabled her to break service twice more to take the first set. In the second set, Mandlikova led 4-1 before King staged a late rally, only to lose her serve in the 12th game to drop the match.

Mandlikova upset Manuela Maleeva stunned Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia 7-5, 7-6 yesterday in the second round of the McDonald’s Australian Women’s Indoor Tennis Championships in Sydney, Australia. Chris Evert Lloyd, Pam Shriver and Andrea Jaeger also posted victories. Lloyd beat Australian Wendy Turnbull 6-3, 6-0, Shriver downed Billie Jean King 6-3, 6-2 and Jaeger got past Anne White 6-2, 6-4.

HANA’S BANANAS Pam Shriver disposed of Hana Mandlikova, 6-3, 6-2, in a semifinal match today in the women’s Australian Indoor Tennis Championships in Sydney, Australia, then said she was disappointed by the performance of her opponent. « It’s always discouraging when someone doesn’t give their best effort and there are ways of losing a match, » Shriver said. « I know that Hana is tired but so are the others and I think her performance was a shame. » Said Mandlikova, « I don’t count this tournament as a real tournament but more as an exhibition and was surprised at the serious manner in which Pam played
