Garrison keeps rising, faces Lloyd in WTA final By Tim Povtak OF THE SENTINEL
By upsetting Hana Mandlikova, the world’s third-ranked women’s player, Garrison claimed a spot in today’s nationally televised Women’s Tennis Association Championship final against crowd-favorite Chris Evert Lloyd.
Currently ranked ninth in the world, Garrison is the first black woman to reach the top 10 since Althea Gibson won at Wimbledon in 1959.
In the biggest victory of her career Saturday, she frustrated the more talented but more erratic Mandlikova, 7-5, 6-4, despite the crowd of 4,000 at Amelia Island pulling for her opponent.
She chased down shots that no one else on the tour could have possibly reached, even No. 1 Martina Navratilova, Mandlikova said.
She ignored questionable calls against her, never lost her composure and kept passing Mandlikova, who has long arms and may be the toughest woman to pass.
In the other semifinal match Saturday, Lloyd had a surprisingly difficult time in beating Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. The day, though, belonged to Garrison, who had lost five previous times to Mandlikova. She has lost to Lloyd six times.
And in final, Zina confirmed she was on-fire by defeating Evert-Lloyd in straight sets, 6-4 6-3.
In the doubles final, the team of Hana Mandlikova and Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa defeated Evert-Lloyd and Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-1, 2-6,6-2
